Independent research. Honest reviews. No paychecks from the brands we cover.
Renewable Energy Advisors was founded on a simple frustration: every product review we could find was either written by someone who'd never touched the equipment, copy-pasted from a press release, or quietly optimized to rank the highest-commission product first regardless of quality.
We started this site because we believed — and still believe — that the person buying their first solar generator for storm season deserves the same quality of independent advice that a professional renewable energy installer would give a client. Clear. Honest. Built around what the buyer actually needs, not what earns the best payout.
Today, renewable-energy-advisors.com publishes in-depth buying guides across solar generators, home solar panels, outdoor solar lighting, residential wind turbines, and RV solar systems. Every recommendation is backed by hours of research, cross-referenced against real owner reviews from verified purchases, and updated whenever we learn the market has changed.
We don't accept payment for rankings. We don't publish sponsored reviews without disclosure. We don't recommend products we wouldn't put on our own roofs, RVs, or backyards. That's the standard we hold ourselves to — and if we ever fall short of it, we want to know.
Every guide starts with days of research — manufacturer specs, real owner reviews across Amazon, Home Depot, and specialty forums, independent testing data, and expert sources. We don't publish until we're confident in what we're saying.
We tell you when something isn't right for your situation, even if it means steering you away from a purchase. Our wind turbine guide tells you explicitly when NOT to buy a wind turbine. That kind of candor builds trust — and it's what we'd want if we were the reader.
The renewable energy market moves fast. Panel efficiencies climb. New products launch. Brands discontinue models. We treat our guides as living documents — not published-and-forgotten — and update them when the information needs updating.
A 400W solar kit that's perfect for a weekend camper is wrong for a full-time boondocker. We build our recommendations around actual use cases and buyer profiles, not universal "best" rankings that ignore context.
Our editorial team combines backgrounds in electrical engineering, sustainable construction, outdoor adventure, and consumer advocacy. No one here has a financial relationship with any brand we cover.
Marcus spent seven years working as a project manager for commercial solar installations before starting REA. He's designed and commissioned systems ranging from 5kW residential rooftop arrays to 200kW commercial ground-mount projects. His off-grid cabin in rural Vermont runs entirely on the solar and wind systems he's tested on this site.
Sara holds a degree in electrical engineering and spent four years at a battery storage startup before pivoting to consumer education. She brings rigorous technical discipline to our reviews — she's the reason our guides distinguish between MPPT and PWM controllers, LFP and NMC battery chemistry, and nameplate vs. real-world wattage. She's also an avid van lifer who's lived off solar for the past three summers.
Jake has been boondocking in his Class C motorhome for over four years and has personally installed — and ripped out — more solar setups than he'd like to admit. He's tested Renogy, ECO-WORTHY, Jackery, Goal Zero, and nearly every other major brand from real campsites, not conference rooms. His reviews reflect what actually works after 60 days of off-grid use, not 60 minutes of unboxing.
Amara worked as a consumer protection researcher before joining REA. She brings the skepticism the renewable energy product market genuinely needs — she's the one who pushes back on inflated wattage claims, reads the fine print on warranty terms, and cross-references specs against real-world test data from independent labs. She also manages our research methodology for wind turbines, a category she describes as "the most aggressively over-marketed in consumer energy."
Every guide published on Renewable Energy Advisors follows the same research process — no shortcuts, no exceptions.
We start by pulling the actual technical specifications from manufacturer documentation — not the marketing copy. We flag where specs are ambiguous, where test conditions don't reflect real-world use, and where claims are unverifiable.
We analyze hundreds of verified purchase reviews across Amazon, Home Depot, Walmart, and specialty retailers. We look specifically for long-term performance reports, failure modes, and the gap between initial impressions and 6-month reality.
Where independent lab testing exists — from sources like Footprint Hero, OutdoorGearLab, OffGrid Benchmark, and SafeWise — we incorporate those results alongside manufacturer claims. Third-party data always takes precedence.
We don't rank products in isolation. Every recommendation is positioned relative to its genuine competitors — explaining specifically why we chose it over the alternatives and who should buy something else instead.
Each guide is reviewed at minimum twice a year, and updated whenever a significant product launch, price change, or new testing data changes our recommendation. Every guide shows its last updated date prominently.
Brands cannot pay to be featured, cannot influence their ranking, and cannot request removal of negative information. If a brand relationship affects any content on this site, it is disclosed prominently — not buried in fine print.
Renewable Energy Advisors participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program and may participate in other affiliate programs. When you click a link on our site and make a purchase, we may earn a commission — at no additional cost to you. This is how we fund our research and keep our guides free to read.
Our editorial decisions are made independently of affiliate relationships. Products are included because our research supports the recommendation, not because of commission rates. We have turned down higher-commission products in favor of lower-commission alternatives that we believed were better for our readers. Our full affiliate disclosure policy is available at renewable-energy-advisors.com/affiliate-disclosure/.
Whether you've spotted something we got wrong, have a product suggestion, or want to share your own off-grid experience — we read everything.
Found an error in one of our guides? Have real-world experience with a product we reviewed? Think we missed something important? We take reader corrections seriously — our goal is accuracy, not ego.
